1. Internal: Provide Strategic and Operational Leadership – Shape IVP’s vision and values; oversee the Senior Leadership Team; direct strategic and annual planning processes; establish annual plans; oversee the appointment and development of staff; manage finances according to sound budgeting and reporting processes; pursue acquisitions (as appropriate); and engage in the selection, design, and marketing of books. 

2. External: Represent IVP in the Broader Publishing World - Develop and maintain healthy relationships with the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association (ECPA), Christian Retail Association networks, and American Booksellers Association; participate in various trade shows and conferences; communicate with authors and potential authors as appropriate; represent IVP in business, church and academic communities; and represent IVP in international relationships (including the International Fellowship of Evangelical Students). 

3. InterVarsity Christian Fellowship: Build an Effective Partnership – Actively participate in InterVarsity board and leadership meetings as requested; leverage IVP resources to support InterVarsity’s strategic initiatives; identify ways to leverage InterVarsity resources to support IVP’s strategic initiatives; increase campus ministry use of IVP resources, including at Urbana and other national conferences.


Spiritual Maturity – The primary qualification is a strong Christian commitment. The President/Publisher is a spiritually maturing follower of Jesus, prayerfully dependent on the Holy Spirit, committed to the Lordship of Christ over all of life, in pursuit of a deep relationship with God through the personal study of his Word, and wholeheartedly affirming of the Doctrinal Basis. 

Personal Characteristics – The President/Publisher is confident, poised, an avid reader, a lover of ideas, emotionally mature, resilient, able to handle stress and criticism, is diplomatic, able to appreciate different points of view, prizes people, and demonstrates impeccable integrity and character. 

Mission Alignment – The President/Publisher embraces IVP’s identity as a ministry of InterVarsity Christian Fellowship. This includes demonstrating a personal and professional commitment to multiethnicity and women in leadership. The President/Publisher should be comfortable and competent working in an ethnically-diverse environment. 

Managerial Leadership – The President/Publisher thinks in a visionary and strategic manner, manages the tension between business needs and ministry goals, builds a high-level executive team, embraces high standards of excellence, encourages people to grow to their fullest potential, communicates with effective verbal, written, and listening skills, and demonstrates management skills in planning, conflict resolution, and decision-making. 

Collaborative Style – Our culture is collegial. To thrive in this environment, the President/Publisher has a relational style that leads through cooperation, partnership, and influence. 

Intellectually Curious – The President/Publisher is a life-long learner and reader—particularly in areas of theology, biblical studies, spiritual formation, ministry, and cultural analysis—who is able to engage with theologically and culturally diverse readers and authors. 

Thoughtful Innovator – Given the rapid transformation of the publishing industry, the President/Publisher is a visionary who leads organizational change and is able to manage risk while simultaneously equipping IVP to adapt. 

Publishing Expertise – The President/Publisher has a successful track record in Christian publishing, embraces IVP’s editorial philosophy and ethos, ensures the recruitment and nurturing of authors with personal ability to attract them, understands publishing technology, has familiarity with intellectual property issues and international rights, is aware of publishing/audience/cultural trends, and possesses a significant background in management, sales, marketing, or editing.

Fiscal Acumen – The President/Publisher has the necessary business acuity to make wise decisions around budget management, resource allocation, appropriate investment for growth strategies, and risk management. The President/Publisher is responsible for setting financial targets and leading IVP to achieve those targets.
